BANYAN ANNOUNCES VINES SUPPORT FOR SNMP AT INTEROP/90
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 10, 1990 -- Banyan Systems today announced
VINES support for the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP),
the network management standard that has gained industry-wide
support. The company also announced the availability of the VINES
SNMP Management Information Base (MIB), which developers can use to
write SNMP Managers that can access information from a VINES
network. Banyan will offer a VINES SNMP Agent, enabling the
communication of VINES network and systems management information
to any SNMP compliant management node.
Together, the VINES SNMP Agent and VINES SNMP MIB provide the tools
to integrate the management of VINES networks into any SNMP
compliant management station. Banyan will demonstrate VINES support
for SNMP at INTEROP/90 in booth #1908. Also at INTEROP/90, NetLabs
and Cabletron will demonstrate management products that provide
support for VINES SNMP.
"Banyan believes that interoperability among computer network
vendors is critical to corporate-wide PC networks in the 90s," said
James D'Arezzo, Banyan's Vice President of Marketing. "We see SNMP
support as an enabling technology for global network management in
a multi-vendor environment. This announcement is in line with

Banyan's strategic commitment to provide interoperability with
every major network management architecture."
By incorporating SNMP support in VINES, the entire corporate-wide
PC network can be managed through SNMP, not just the TCP/IP
connected portions of the network. SNMP management stations that
incorporate the VINES SNMP MIB can now collect all the system and
network management data that is currently available to VINES system
and network administrators. VINES network and system management
options provide performance information on individual servers,
services, connections and network topology, and allow global
management of network services, such as File, Print, and Mail.
"A significant advantage of the VINES SNMP implementation is that
it does not require every server to run TCP/IP and SNMP software.
Only one server is required to run SNMP and TCP/IP in order to
gather the total VINES network information," said D'Arezzo. "These
major cost savings are accomplished due to the VINES integrated
protocol architecture. Furthermore, a network administrator can
choose to run the SNMP software on any server, concurrently with
any other VINES services, such as SNA gateways."
Banyan's support of the VINES SNMP Agent and the announced
availability of the VINES SNMP MIB underscore Banyan's continuing
commitment to deliver standards-based networking products. Banyan

Manager products.
