  5. BANYAN ANNOUNCES VINES SUPPORT FOR SNMP AT INTEROP/90

  7. SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 10, 1990 -- Banyan Systems today announced
  8. VINES support for the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP),
  9. the network management standard that has gained industry-wide
  10. support. The company also announced the availability of the VINES
  11. SNMP Management Information Base (MIB), which developers can use to
  12. write SNMP Managers that can access information from a VINES
  13. network. Banyan will offer a VINES SNMP Agent, enabling the
  14. communication of VINES network and systems management information
  15. to any SNMP compliant management node.

  17. Together, the VINES SNMP Agent and VINES SNMP MIB provide the tools
  18. to integrate the management of VINES networks into any SNMP
  19. compliant management station. Banyan will demonstrate VINES support
  20. for SNMP at INTEROP/90 in booth #1908. Also at INTEROP/90, NetLabs
  21. and Cabletron will demonstrate management products that provide
  22. support for VINES SNMP.

  25. vendors is critical to corporate-wide PC networks in the 90s," said

  33. every major network management architecture."

  35. By incorporating SNMP support in VINES, the entire corporate-wide
  36. PC network can be managed through SNMP, not just the TCP/IP
  37. connected portions of the network. SNMP management stations that
  38. incorporate the VINES SNMP MIB can now collect all the system and
  39. network management data that is currently available to VINES system
  40. and network administrators. VINES network and system management
  41. options provide performance information on individual servers,
  42. services, connections and network topology, and allow global
  43. management of network services, such as File, Print, and Mail.

  45. "A significant advantage of the VINES SNMP implementation is that
  46. it does not require every server to run TCP/IP and SNMP software.
  47. Only one server is required to run SNMP and TCP/IP in order to
  48. gather the total VINES network information," said D'Arezzo. "These
  49. major cost savings are accomplished due to the VINES integrated
  50. protocol architecture. Furthermore, a network administrator can
  51. choose to run the SNMP software on any server, concurrently with
  52. any other VINES services, such as SNA gateways."
